San Diego County Credit Union Stadium (Formerly Qualcomm Stadium): A Huge San Diego Stadium for Football, Baseball, and More

Most people think of SDCCU Stadium as the former home of the San Diego Chargers and Padres, or for the weekly swap meet that is currently held in its parking lot, but this San Diego stadium is a great venue for a variety of sporting events. It is one of the few large stadiums in San Diego that is widely available for outside events, and is very adaptable.

Its natural grass field and seating for more than 70,000 make it an ideal venue for large spectator sporting events such as football, lacrosse, soccer, or rugby games, but other parts of the stadium complex could be a good fit for smaller or more non-traditional uses.

The Stadium’s Parking Lot is a Venue in and of Itself

The stadium’s huge parking lot is great asset to this San Diego venue that many event promoters don’t consider.

The SDCCU stadium parking lot can be used as a venue all on its own for large outdoor events. The 4.5 million square feet of parking lot space is virtually free of any obstructions and is conveniently equipped with accessible power. It would be a great space for functional fitness competitions, a huge outdoor basketball tournament, motor sports, or action sports like skateboarding or freestyle BMX. Or, if you are utilizing the stadium for your event, you could use the huge outdoor space to accommodate any number of vendors, exhibitors, or pre-game activities.

Other On-Site Amenities

SDCCU has two on-site restaurants, in addition to the many concessions stands you would normally find in a large stadium. On the Plaza Level, you’ll find Murphy’s Bar and Restaurant, and the End Zone Club, which has fine dining options, is located on the Loge Level. Since SDCCU is a former professional-level stadium, it also has 115 luxury suites that can be used for your VIP guests.

Practice Fields

Adjacent to the main stadium are additional practice fields perfect for smaller events. These 4.3 acres of space are fully lighted and fenced, and have a high-quality playing surface that’s great for sporting events, or things like concerts or festivals.

Notable Events at SDCCU Stadium in San Diego

Currently, SDCCU Stadium is the home field for the San Diego State University Aztecs football team, and hosts the annual Holiday Bowl game. In 2019, the stadium will begin hosting the home games for the San Diego Fleet in the inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football (AAF).

In the past, SDCCU Stadium has been the site of three Super Bowl games, two World Series, two Major League Baseball All-Star Games, and multiple FIFA tournaments, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The stadium was the home of the San Diego Chargers from 1967 through 2016—until the team moved to Los Angeles—and of the San Diego Padres until their move to Petco Park in Downtown San Diego in 2003.

A Large Event Space with a Fabulous San Diego Location

The stadium is conveniently located near the Interstate 8 and Interstate 15 interchange in the neighborhood of Mission Valley. It is a short drive from all kinds of shopping and dining options, as well as hotels.

For those looking to travel to the stadium via public transportation, the San Diego Trolley’s Green Line has a stop right in the stadium’s parking lot, making it extremely accessible for event participants staying at local hotels, or for those who want to avoid traffic and parking.
