Walter Pyramid: A Versatile and Impressive Sports Arena
Walter Pyramid, located on the campus of Long Beach State, is an impressive structure in a great location. Standing 18 stories high, its dramatic cobalt blue exterior can be seen from miles away. Its distinctive pyramid shape and many great amenities make it an impressive, but still practical, facility for just about any sporting event.
This Long Beach venue was constructed in 1994 for a cost of $22 million, and it has received some upgrades since then, such as a large Daktronics videoboard, LED arena lights, and a new maple wood playing surface.
The Walter Pyramid Can Play Host To Many Different Types of Sporting Events
While the Walter Pyramid houses the University’s basketball and volleyball teams, and is known largely as a basketball and volleyball arena, this Long Beach venue is quite versatile. Its unique cantilevered bleacher system allows for a wide variety of configurations. All of the arena’s bleachers can be raised by a sophisticated hydraulics system to expose a total floor space area of more than 39,000 square feet. The bleachers can also be configured in a variety of ways to accommodate your event and its spectators.
The Walter pyramid can seat a crowd of more than 5,000 people for a spectator event. The floor space, which measures a perfect 345 feet on each side, can also be configured for five basketball courts or nine volleyball courts, or used as one large continuous space. It has been used for events such as the IBJJF World Jiu Jitsu Championships, the Long Beach Step Show, the Special Olympics Southern California Summer Games, and the Jimmy Kim Taekwondo Tournament.
Other Amenities at the Walter Pyramid
This impressive modern Long Beach arena features a large parking area nearby for event participants and guests, an in-house box office, a hospitality room, ample concourse space for vendors and exhibitors, free wi-fi, professional-level locker room facilities, a hospitality room, TV production capabilities, and many other great amenities.
The Walter Pyramid also houses a strength and conditioning center, as well as a state-of-the-art conference center called The Pointe. The Pointe is great for a wide range of activities, including banquets, workshops, lectures, or other types of meetings.
Accommodations in campus residence halls and dining rooms are available for your event participants in the summer months (early June through mid-August) when the University is not in session. In the summer you can also utilize the University’s other recreational areas, such as the swimming pool, racquetball courts, and outdoor fields, or rent other rooms on campus for your event.
Significance of the Walter Pyramid
The Walter Pyramid is one of only four true pyramid structures in the United States (the other three being Luxor Las Vegas, the San Diego Innovation Center, and the Memphis Pyramid, which was formerly an arena as well, but now houses a Bass Pro Shops). It is believed to be one of the largest space-frame structures on the continent, utilizing 18,000 steel tubes and connection modules.
The success of Long Beach State’s 49ers sports teams also adds to the prestige of this venue. The university has won the Big West Conference Commissioner’s Cup, recognizing them as the highest achieving school for overall athletics in the conference, eight times since the award’s inception in 1998.
Booking the Walter Pyramid
Since the Walter Pyramid is home to Long Beach State’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams, as well as their Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams, it makes the arena a very busy venue. It can be difficult to secure this arena for an outside sporting event. Fortunately for clients working with Stylehawk for venue sourcing, we have a strong connection with venue management at Long Beach State and can leverage that relationship on behalf of our clients.
